About The Society

The Greater Wigston Historical Society was formed in 1980 by Duncan Lucas and a group of keen local historians.

The Society meets monthly with the exception of July. In the summer months we have two outings to visit places of historic interest whilst the other 9 meetings (see meetings page) are held at Age UK Oadby & Wigston, Paddock Street, Wigston at 7.30pm on the 3rd Wednesday of each month.

Why not come along and see what we do? Visitors are always welcome. Contact one of the committee who will look after you during your visit.

"WIGSTON WITH TWO STEEPLES" In the Middle Ages it was known as Wigston Two Steeples as, unusually, there were two mediaeval churches there, All Saints' and St Wistan's. St Wistan's is so called because it was one of the places where the body of St Wistan or Wigstan rested before burial. Wigstan was a Mercian prince who was assassinated, but was regarded as a Martyr. He was initially buried at Repton, but his body was then moved to Evesham.
